We strongly encourage potential clients to own or to have access to a strong enough internet connection to support video communication on a desktop, tablet, or laptop. Although cellphones are acceptable, they are not encouraged. In addition, potential clients need to be able to provide their own confidential, safe, and comfortable environment while receiving services. Due to distant therapy limitations, individuals considered to be at a high risk of harm to self and/or others do not meet the criteria for distant therapy services.
There are a number of key benefits and limitations to discuss when deciding if distant counseling is right for you.
The most obvious benefit to distance counseling is the convenience. Distance counseling sessions can be held at any location that is convenient for you with no additional cost for travel. Enjoy the comfort of staying in your home or other comfortable space without the need to drive. For those who live in under served communities, have mobility issues or have difficult arranging transportation distance counseling can be a great alternative.
Other things to mindful of are the limitations of distant communication. The most obvious limitation is that you will not have your session in person. Your counselor will not be able to see your full range of body movements, which sometimes help allude to other items brought up in in-person session. If you feel that not having that physical in person presence to your session is not enough then distance counseling may not be for you. Additionally as the counseling session will be conducted over the internet any unforeseen internet/connection issues may negatively impact your therapy. It is strongly recommended that you maintain a strong internet connection. There are many ways around our limitations that we both will make up for, but all items mentioned is something to keep in mind when exploring if distant therapy is right for you.
